Crochet Sports Team Coffee Cozy Pattern – Bonus UCLA Joe Bruin Logo Pattern

UCLA Football Colors

With my current obsession in learning about football, it seemed only fitting (perhaps fated?) that my big brother would request a new coffee cozy, this one, with the UCLA football team colors.

I readily agreed to make this. But of course, I don’t make things easy for myself. I couldn’t just make a cozy with the UCLA colors. Oh no. I had to attempt to make a crochet version of their mascot, Joe Bruin the bear. So I’m including that pattern as a bonus below the instructions for the cozy.

Let’s get started!

Notes:

  1. This cozy is made in 2 piece: the cozy (body) and the bear logo
  2. Numbers at the end of the instructions: In square brackets “[ ]” will be the total stitch count for that row/round.
  3. The first chain in each row/round does not count as your first stitch, so don’t skip your first stitch.
  4. An increase is 2 stitches made in the same stitch.
  5. A decrease is 2 stitches condensed into one stitch.
  6. Some increases (2-3 sts in one st below) will be split in 2 colors, so the instructions will appear something like this: “1/2 inc in black, 1/2 inc brown”, which means the first st you do for the inc will be in black and the second will be in brown, or “1/3 inc in black, 1/3 inc in black, 1/3 inc in brown”, which means the first and second stitches are in black and the third is in brown.

Bonus Pattern

Below is the step-by-step pattern for the UCLA mascot, Joe Bruin bear. I only recommend doing this if you have time or really want it because it can take quite some time and attention to detail. The image below is a pixelated picture you can use as a guide to see which stitch goes where.

Assembly and Finish

With both pieces finished (if you made both, that is), you can now assemble them. I used about 1 yard of the black lace yarn and stitched the mascot onto the cozy. Now go forth and have some coffee!
