Crochet R2D2 Coffee Cozy Pattern

Hello crafters! Let us tap into our inner nerds and continue the Star Wars coffee cozy series. So many options to go with, but I went with the request my brother had. Let’s get right to it, shall we?

So let’s make another droid! I give you the endlessly entertaining R2D2.

Materials

Materials:

  • Sizes “K” and “E” hooks
  • Worsted Weight yarn in desired colors
  • Tapestry needle
  • 2 Stitch markers

Yarns I Used:

  1. Red Heart Super Saver in black
  2. Red Heart Super Saver in white
  3. Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in colonial (blue)
  4. Big Twist Yarns Sincerely in light gray
  5. Caron Simply Soft in harvest red (bright red)
  6. Loops & Threads Impeccable in kelly green (bright green)

 

Notes and Abbreviations

Abbreviations:

  • St(s) = stitch(es)
  • Ch(s) = chain(s)
  • Sl st = slip stitch
  • Sc(s) = single crochet(s)
  • Rep = repeat
  • Rnd(s) = round(s)
  • Inc = increase
  • BLO = back loop only
  • FLO = front loop only

Notes:

  1. This cozy is made in 7 piece: the cozy (body), 2 rectangular pieces, 2 square pieces, and 2 round pieces
  2. Numbers at the end of the instructions: In square brackets “[ ]” will be the total stitch count for that row/round.
  3. The first chain in each row/round does not count as your first stitch, so don’t skip your first stitch.
  4. The stitch markers will be used to help you gauge where to begin the to[ section of the R2D2 dome.
  5. An increase is 2 stitches made in the same stitch.
  6. A few color changes will happen in the middle of an increase (increase = 2 sts in the same st), making it 1 stitch in one color and the 2nd st in the new color.

 

Instructions for the R2D2 Coffee Cozy

Instructions for the cozy: (use white, blue, and light gray; use the “K” hook)

1. In white, ch 22, sl st the ends together to create a loop. [21 sts]

6. Ch 1, turn. *Inc 1, sc 6.* Rep from * to * two more times around. End off. [inc rnd to 24 sts]

7. Ch 1, turn. Sc 24 around. [24 sts]

8. In white, ch 1, turn. Sc 7. In blue, sc 9. In white, sc 8. [24 sts]

9. In white, ch 1, turn. Sc 24 around, making sure to go in the BLO when over the blue stitches. [24 sts]

10. In white, ch 1, turn. Sc 7. In blue, sc 9 in the FLO of the white stitches below. In white, sc 8. [24 sts]

12. In white, sc 7. Inc ½ in white and ½ in blue in FLO. In blue, sc 7 in FLO. Inc ½ in blue and ½ in white in FLO. In white, Sc 7 in both loops. [27 sts]

13. In light gray, ch 1, turn. Sc 27 around, making sure to go in the BLO when over the blue stitches. [27 sts]

14. In blue, ch 1, turn. Sc 10 in both loops. Sc 9 in FLO. Sc 8 in both loops. [27 sts]

15. In light gray, ch 1, turn. Sc 9 in both loops. Sc 9 in BO. Sc 9 in both loops. [27 sts]

16. In light gray, ch 1, turn. Sc 27 across. [27 sts]

17. Rep R16. End off. Weave in ends. [27 sts]

18. Count 11 stitches in the center of your top row, one stitch on either side of the 9 blue stitches. Place your stitch markers on the first and eleventh stitches. These will be where you begin your R2D2 head.

19. In light gray, on these 11 stitches, sc 11 across. [11 sts]

20. Turn. Do not chain 1. Sc 1 in the 2nd st. Sc 8 across, stopping before the last st. [9 sts]

21. Turn. Do not chain 1. Sc 1 in the 2nd st. Sc 6 across, stopping before the last st. End off. Weave in ends. [7 sts]

Instructions for Rectangles: (use the blue yarn and “E” hook; make 2)

1. Ch 5

2. Sc 1 in the 2nd ch from the hook. Sc 3 across. [4 sts]

3. Ch 1, turn. Sc 4 across. End off. [4 sts]

Instructions for Squares: (use the blue yarn and “E” hook; make 2)

1. Ch 3

2. Sc 1 in the 2nd ch from the hook. Sc 1 across. [2 sts]

3. Ch 1, turn. Sc 2 across. End off. [2 sts]

Instructions for Circles: (use black yarn and “E” hook; make 2)

1. Ch 2 wide chains.

2. Sc 4 in the 2nd ch from the hook. Sl st to close the rnd. End off.

Assembly

And now to assemble all your smaller parts onto the main cozy.

With the black yarn, you’ll attach one rectangle and both circles in place.

With the red yarn, you’ll attach the one square.
