The Handmade Christmas Tradition Continues
Hello everyone! Last year I wrote a blog post on the christmas tradition of having handmade items throughout the house. You can see it here. For a time, my husband and I were staying with my parents because our financial situation was pretty tricky. By last christmas, we were able to get back on our feet, but it was so close to christmas itself, and my cousin Cory and I got busy making the christmas treat baskets (you can see the DIY and recipes for that here), that we didn’t get a chance to decorate for it.
But this year! This year we have the chance to put up our decorations for the holiday. So I wanted to continue the tradition that my grandmother and mother started of keeping the little handmade treasures our family makes and displaying them for christmas. (Check out the crocheted mini tree skirt mom made!)
My mother and grandmother (and some of my other family members) have some impressively large collections of handcrafted christmas decorations that members of the family have made over the years. My collection is not nearly as big, but I do have some things I know I’ll treasure for years while my collection grows.
Some of the items I have were gifted to me by my mother. She made these cute little crocheted ornaments when I was a little girl, and we’ve brought them out for christmas every year since. When my husband and I moved out last year, she went up to her christmas tree picked out several from her own collection, and boxed them up for me to bring to my new home. Thanks mom!
One christmas, not too long ago, my brother hosted one of our family christmas parties and let me show up early with extra decorations for his house. I took the opportunity to recruit my mother and husband to help me make some DIYs I’d been waiting for an excuse to try out. So we set to work on these poinsettia rolls, the mistletoe trees, and t-shirt snowman. It’s amazing what you can make with a little foam and hot glue!
Cream Soda to Christmas
For another craft, I recruited my mother and husband again and a couple of my cousins to help me out. With a set of empty cream soda and root beer bottles, yarn, and some sturdy Mod Podge glue, we made several christmas-y bottle-vases. I didn’t get to use these last year, but I’m glad that this year they get to come out on display. Admittedly, this idea came about so that my cousins and I could down a twelve pack of cream sodas and root beers in one day. #somuchsugar #iregretnothing
More To Come
Since the interest in handcrafting is a trait in my family, I know that as the years go by I’ll be adding more handmade christmas decorations from family members to my own collection. I look forward to seeing what we come up with!
Until Next Time
